ARC Review: The Junkyard Cowboy by Christie Craig

The Junkyard Cowboy is book three in Christie Craig’s Tall, Hot & Texan series. A series that centers on a group of friends who vowed always to be there for each other; this time it’s Jennifer’s story. This is one of those fun and easy Texas Romance reads that I love reading every now and then.  The characters are all very likable and easy to sympathize with, Jennifer isn’t one of those stupid heroines that does something incredibly stupid because she’s too stubborn to have good sense. Clay is a jack of all trades, but he always wanted to go into law enforcement he always pictured that by this time in his life he would have been a Detective, but all he is now is rancher and owner of junkyard. Throw in Pete the old man that Clay inherited with the junkyard and his mongrel dog Devil and it’s an all-around a fun read with great romance, action and comic relief.

Jennifer is an interior designer it what she always wanted, but after agreeing to testifying against a client in a child abuse case she hasn’t been able to find work, she also has been getting threats to top it all off her fiancĂ© dumps her for another woman. Jennifer’s upset over it and fed up with once again losing the guy she searches the internet for the career with the lowest divorce rate she then decides she will only marry someone from the lowest percentile i.e. funeral director. The night after she runs the plan by her friends, who all think it’s stupid, she gets run off the road the only place for her to run to after the guy gets out and starts to chase her is a ramshackle office in the junkyard. Clay was in the middle of taking a shower when he heard someone banging on the office door, he comes running out naked to help a woman who was being chased by a gun wielding thug.

Jennifer and Clay have a mutual friend he also happens to be a lawyer and married to one of Jennifer’s best friends. He suggests Jennifer hide until after the trial, Clay offers his house, it’s out on a ranch with no real close neighbors. The sexual attraction is strong between Jennifer and Clay but both are hesitant to start anything, Jennifer and her new rules that Clay breaks all of them. Clay has reasons of his own and has a hard time trusting again but Jennifer is kind, smart, and beautiful it was hard for him not to fall in bed with her what they both agree to as just a fling quickly escalates into something more but will either of them give when it comes to trusting again. All the while the gun wielding thug is trying to track down the naked man who had dared interfere with his hit.

Overall, this was a good read. It had some pretty steamy scenes and Pete and Devil add a bit of quirky to the story.

ARC Review: Most Valuable Playboy by Lauren Blakely

I have enjoyed books by Lauren Blakely in the past and I am a huge fan of sports romance books, so I knew I had to read Most Valuable Playboy. This book was a great read and I enjoyed it a lot. This was everything that I have come to love from Lauren Blakely, sweet and sexy with some humor and great banter. I think readers are going to fall in love with this one just like I did.

Cooper is a sexy quarterback that has never had trouble scoring, but now that his reputation is on the line as well as his team's, he knows he needs to play it safe. When he goes up for bid on a charity auction, he will do anything to avoid being bought by a cougar that is determined to win more than just a date with him. So when his best friend's little sister that he has known for years jumps in with the winning bid, he takes the opportunity to announce to the whole world that she is his girlfriend before she has a chance to correct him. Afterward though they are told to keep pretending it's real as Cooper is in contract negotiations, but the more time that goes on the more real their feelings start to get.

I liked these characters a lot. I loved that they had known each other for so long and that there were already feelings there. Violet was very easy for me to relate to and I really felt like she was real and genuine. She was the type of heroine I love and could see myself being friends with in real life. It was impossible not to fall for Cooper. He was sexy and sweet and just a really good guy. These two had a great connection and chemistry, and I loved seeing them figure things out as they took things to another level.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I loved the characters, and it was great to see Cooper with his teammates. The secondary characters here were just as enjoyable to read about as Cooper and Violet were, and I would definitely love to get more of them. This was just one of those fun books that you can lose yourself in and I had a great time reading it. Definitely one of my favorites from Lauren Blakely and one I highly recommend.

Feature: Mr. Big by Delancey Stewart

He’s tortured and dark, angsty and arrogant. You want the truth? He’s kind of an A-hole.

He’s also the CEO.

Everything in my life goes according to plan, and that’s the way I like it. I got the degree. I got the job. Now I just need to prove that I have what it takes to succeed in the real world.

If there’s one thing that’s not in my plans, it’s falling in love with my boss.

Most relationships don’t start with one person calling the other out in public for being an arrogant jerk. Then again, most CEOs don’t cut their own employees in line at the coffeehouse and bark orders at people like they own the place.

Maybe pissing Oliver Cody off isn’t the right move. And now that he’s part of my world, all my plans go straight to hell.

ARC Review: So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks

So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks is the second book in Sparks' Embraced series. It is a fantasy romance (which is a very small genre that needs more attention). While I had some of the same misgivings as I had from the first book, How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days, I enjoyed this book more than its predecessor.

Brigitta knows nothing of her origins. All she knows is her life growing up on the Isle of the Moon with the nuns there and her adopted sisters, and that she is Embraced. Being Embraced means several things. First, she was born on one of the days where the two moons eclipsed, which then caused her to have a magical ability. For Brigitta, this is an ability to know when someone is hiding something, to discover those secrets, and find hidden objects. It also means that should she step foot on the mainland, she is in danger because four of the five kings fears her abilities, and would kill her because of them.

On her way to visit one of her adopted sisters who is about to give birth, her ship is attacked by pirates. She is surprised to find she is a missing princess of Tourin, and her brother, the king, has been looking for her. These pirates think to take a ransom from King Gunther in exchange for his little sister. One of these pirates is Rupert, who has made it his life's mission to thwart King Gunther who he claims ruined his life and family.

Rupert struggles with his conscience and honor with delivering Brigitta to King Gunther. She is of the same lineage as the man he hates the most, but she appears to be nothing like the cruel man. He then finds out the true purpose for the King's recent search for his sister, and he doesn't want to put her into such a horrible situation. Brigitta is also torn when it comes to Rupert. She despises the way he threatened the people she loves to abduct her, but the secrets he holds close inflame her curiosity. She also gets confused by his pirate side which conflicts with his honorable side.

The romance and passion in this story were very compelling. Sparks was able to create a complex chemistry that worked so well. I found myself needing to know and understand every secret! My only misgivings were the same as with the previous book. Some of the dialogue felt too modern for the fantasy setting. I also didn't like how the book had an intro that spells out the magic system and the land's political standings. In most of the fantasies I've read, you learn about those things within the story so it feels like you're discovering them as you read. This is just my personal preference however; I could definitely see other readers liking it all spelled out in the beginning to help them understand.

This book was great, and I'm glad I've read it. This tiny genre of fantasy romance needs more material, and I'm stoked to have this installment. It's been quite awhile since a book has captured my attention as well as this one. I can't wait to read the third in the series!

ARC Review: Sexcation by Heidi McLaughlin

I was immediately drawn in by the blurb of Sexcation by Heidi McLaughlin. It really had me wanting to read this story without giving much information at all. While there was a lot of promise here and some enjoyable moments, this wasn't my favorite book of Heidi's. I still think that a lot of readers will enjoy it though and if it sounds like one you might like it's worth checking out.

Jade and Jackson are on a week long vacation, and when they meet they are each looking for an escape from their lives. They decide to spend the week together with some great sex, but no details about each other, including names. But what happens when their time together is over and things aren't as easy as they thought they would be to walk away from?

I did like these two, though I will admit that I struggled a bit at times with Jade. She was very emotional at times and that made it hard for me to connect with her. I liked Jackson and felt like he was a good guy, but again I felt like I couldn't connect with him. I just felt like there wasn't much that I could relate to or feel invested in with these two, and that had my interest waning as this book went on. They did have some good banter and some cute moments, but I just had a hard time finding much to really care about here.

I also felt like things were a bit repetitive at times, with Jackson constantly having to prove himself and Jade making things beyond complicated. There were a few surprises here and I did enjoy those. So while this one wasn't entirely what I was looking for or hoping it would be, there were several things that I did like. This one unfortunately though was just okay and wasn't great for me. I still think it is worth the shot though as a lot of other readers seemed to really love this one.

ARC Review: Ready to Run by Lauren Layne

Yet another wonderful Rom-Com by Lauren Layne. Lauren Layne is one of those author I will no matter what always read. Even when the story or trope isn’t one I usually enjoy reading, like this one Reality TV I can’t stand and The Bachelor TBH I think is stupid, I was worried how LL could pull it off and for me to enjoy it but just like with sports romance I enjoy the cheesy romance version better the real life version.  My love for LL’s Rom-Coms is strong and I am so glad I read it. LL transitions well from Big City Romance to Small Town Romance and oh what a small town it is. Full of quirky well-meaning busy bodies that bring so much to the story. An active setting that is very well done and a romance that leaves you swooning.

Jordan Carpenter is an up and coming T.V. producer and the one thing she needs to make or break her career is finding the new Bachelor. Well not "The Bachelor" but along the same lines except that the potential groom for the show needs to be runaway grooms. Men who have left their fiancĂ©es at the altar and Jordan has found the perfect one. So far Luke Elliot has left three women at the altar, yet he still seems to be the town's darling boy, a well-liked and still a very much sought after fireman. To Jordan and her boss he is the perfect choice only one problem he doesn't want to do it. Jordan goes to his small town in Montana and says she won't leave until he agrees. Only now that she's there she realizes that he's not just perfect for the show but for her too, because Luke isn't what he seems he's better.

Jordan and Luke have this great chemistry that confuses them at first so they start out not friendly but the more Jordan digs into Luke's past, and it is quite the past, the more she likes him and the more that Luke sees of Jordan and sees she’s not what she seems either, it also helps that everyone in town is pushing them together it's not hard for them to finally give in. But Jordan loves her job, and her job depends on getting Luke on the show where he will met a dozen other woman for him to pick who to marry. Luke won’t do the show no matter what his past is that the past and he’s not willing bring his ex-fiancĂ©es into this mess, he is willing however to help Jordan face her demons, but can Jordan give up her career she has work so hard for, for man?

Overall, the story is funny and enchanting and I can't wait for more.

ARC Review: The Better Man by Barbie Bohrman

The Better Man is the second book in the Allen Brothers series by Barbie Bohrman. After reading and loving The Best Man (Allen Brothers series #1), I couldn't wait to read the next book! I was really excited to get to know Max better, especially after helping the hero from the first book with his grand gesture! This book is a standalone story though, and you don't need to read these in order. That being said though, I would recommend it if possible since the first one is so good! While I loved the previous book though, The Better Man wasn't exactly what I had been hoping for.

Max Allen has it good. His job reviewing night clubs for his own TV show has him rich with cash and women. The only thing that he doesn't have going for him is the woman that is intent on beating him to every night club in town for her own reviews on her YouTube channel, Daphne Rodriguez. But when the ratings start to slide and his boss tells him that he has to secure Daphne as his partner if he wants to keep his job, Max reluctantly sets out to convince her to join his network and show. But as much as Max dislikes Daphne, she dislikes him more. Needing to provide for her family though, Daphne can't turn away the amount of money they are offering her. But the more these two are around one another, the line between love and hate starts to blur and soon the attraction is more than they can fight.

I will admit a huge part of my struggles here were Daphne and Max themselves. Max drove me nuts! He was so self absorbed and such a douche at times that it made it really hard for him to like. His most redeeming quality was how he was with his family, especially his nieces. He was adorable with them, and that was what had me not hating him at the beginning of this book. He did get better later on, but it was really hard to like him at times. Daphne while being strong for her family and a good granddaughter and sister, she was also hard to like for parts of this story. She judged Max and was irritating at times. Luckily I did like her more, and she got better as the story progressed. I never felt the pull beyond the attraction here for these two, and their relationship seemed to change from antagonistic attraction to intense like/love almost instantly. Frankly I just didn't see it or believe it.

So while I liked parts of this book, overall I just never really felt like it was 100% genuine. I wish I had seen more of a real connection grow between these two, but I don't feel like we got that here at all. They never really had any bonding moments before things were suddenly different between them and it was hard to see how they got from Point A (Hate) to Point B (Like/Love). I also have to admit that the next book is one that while I am interested in reading, I am a bit wary of. Something happened in this book to set that one up (I won't say what so as not to spoil anything) and I am still struggling with it. If things were different it would be easier to get behind the story, but having things go down the way they did here I think it will be harder for me to accept though I will definitely be reading it. Sorry to be so vague, but I really don't want to be the one to spoil it. I do like the characters in this series, and it was great to see familiar faces from the first book. I think that readers will enjoy this one, especially if you like enemies to lovers. If you are looking for a deep and emotional connection though, this one might not be for you.
