ARC Review: The Truth About Love and Dukes by Laura Lee Guhrke

I have read Laura Lee Guhrke before and everytime I read her I think,” I need to read her more.” Her heroines are always very unique and fun! I especially love that her heroines aren’t all from the same class and may even be considered “modern.”  I was super excited to see that this was the first in a series. I was instantly hooked on Henry, Duke of Torqui and Irene Deverill.

Irene although a part of high society is also part of the working class.  Irene has taken over her family business and runs a gossip column that is wildly popular. One of the topics of her column catches the eye of Henry, especially when the famous advice columnist, Lady Truelove’s encourages Henry’s mother to follow her heart and elope with a man below her station. Henry immediately searches out for Irene but he is nothing like he expected.

Henry is a Duke and he takes his responsibilities very seriously.  Henry is determined to stop his mothers wedding at any cost even if it means blackmailing Irene and buying her paper from her. Unfortunately for Irene, her father is more than happy to sell the paper to Henry but stopping Irene’s gossip paper is not the only thing that Henry is after. He is determined that Irene has to convince his mother not to marry and thus bring ruin on the rest of the family. Henry makes Irene and Clara, her sister, stay with him and his family in the hopes that his mother will come to her senses. What Henry doesn’t calculate is that being so close to Irene might be more than he can handle.

Guhrke’s books are always so fun and filled with witty dialogue, “The Truth About Love and Dukes” is no exception. Henry was a bit of a stiff but Irene was a perfect balance. I’m counting down to the next book in the series.

ARC Review: Losing Kyler by Siobhan Davis

I couldn't wait to get my hands on Losing Kyler by Siobhan Davis after finishing the first book in the Kennedy Boys series. These books need to be read in order as this is not a standalone and continues the story from the first book. Trust me you will want to start at the beginning, so if you haven't read Finding Kyler yet I highly recommend you go pick it up! This series is addictive and I am already anxious for the next book, Keeping Kyler.

Losing Kyler picks up where Finding Kyler left off. Faye's world has once again been ripped our from under her as she discovers that nothing was as it seemed. Her entire life has been filled with lies and her relationship with Kyler is forbidden. As both Kyler and Faye try to come to grips with the truths that have been revealed, they struggle to stay away from each other though they know they must. When Kyler's manipulative ex returns and is determined to destroy their family, Kyler will do whatever it takes to protect them. Can the Kennedy's find a way to stop her and keep her from tearing their family and Kyler and Faye apart?

I love Kyler and Faye so much. These two have such a strong connection and their chemistry is off the charts. This book definitely showed more of their struggles though and it wasn't easy for them. I felt so bad for all they were going through, and the fact that a lot of it they faced pretty much alone. I loved that Faye had a friend in Brad and that he was there for her, though I did feel bad for him as well. I love his character so much, and I really hope that he gets a book as well. I will admit that there were times that both Kyler and Faye frustrated me here, though I did understand their actions even when I didn't like them. These two just never seem to catch a break, and I really hope that things work out since it is clear just how much they care about one another.

Overall, this was another great book in this series and I can't wait for the next! These books are sexy and sweet, angsty and impossible to put down. Once I started Losing Kyler, I didn't want to do anything else but read while all the while trying to savor it as well. I was new to Siobhan Davis at the start of this series, but she is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. This series is one I definitely recommend, and I think readers are going to love this latest installment in the Kennedy Boys series just as much as I did.

ARC Review: Hold Me Down by Sara Taylor Woods

Calling all readers who are into BDSM and erotic content, this book is for YOU. This book is also for those of you who like in depth character exploration. If you are into books where characters find themselves, you just must meet Talia.

Talia is a 20 year old college student when she meets 27 year old doctoral student Sean. Talia is the first orthodox Jewish character I've read about in a book and I gotta say I really enjoyed that. Talia observes a number of religious rituals that are relevant to her self exploration as a sexual being and a masochist. I know it seems like these things would be unrelated but somehow the author wove them together.

Talia knows that she associates pain with sexual arousal. She had a bad experience when she tried to express those feelings so she hides them. The interesting thing is that Talia is not just hiding from other people, she has been hiding from herself. She is so convinced that what she wants is wrong that she won't even let herself acknowledge it. Sean sees right through Talia's disguise though. I think almost from the first meeting he gets that Talia is a masochist and a sexual submissive. Sean does little things to help Talia see who she is and also to see that what she wants is not deviant but is possible.

I don't know much about Sean which is one of the reasons this book is not a five star read for me. I don't like reading books that are written in only one POV and this one is all from Talia's POV. As a result of that, it was hard for me to get a feel for Sean. In my mind there isn't a romance in this book. Sean is more of a prop in Talia's journey toward self discovery.

The erotic content in this book will leave you panting and fanning yourself because OMG it was super hawt. I loved watching Talia learned how to accept herself and then to stand up for herself. Especially to her father who was a jackass. Even though the sex in this book is really grown up, Talia being such a young character had a lot of young character issues. I'm not into the NA genre so that dulled my enthusiasm somewhat for this book. But if you like YA or NA this will be a particularly strong read for you. I would recommend this for any erotic romance reader.

ARC Review: After the Dark by Cynthia Eden

I have read several erotic/romance/suspense novels by Cynthia Eden and I have to say, there are not many (if any) authors who do this genre better than her. Eden is really really good at character building, intricate plot weaving, and super hot romance. This book does not disappoint.

After the Dark is about FBI profiler Samantha Dark and her partner Blake. Since it's in the book synopsis I can tell you that this book opens in kind of a surprising way. Samantha has been hunting a serial killer. She was convinced she built an accurate profile of the killer but she and Blake are confronted with what seems like incontrovertible proof that Samantha was all wrong about her profile. Samantha winds up seeking refuge with her ex-lover and long time friend only to discover that he is actually the killer she has been searching for. We find out pretty quickly that even though nothing happened between Samantha and her partner Blake, she immediately cut the relationship with the psycho ex when she met Blake. Killer ex knew, even though Samantha wouldn't admit it, that Blake was in the way. Anyway, the night that Samantha finds out her ex is a serial killer, something happens in the confrontation between the two of them that nobody knows about. All Blake knows is that when he arrives on the scene, Samantha is bloody and half unconscious.

After that night, and because her boss was a major D bag, Samantha's career with the FBI is pretty much over. Samantha moves to a small town for the anonymity and peace. She leaves Blake behind and tries to pull the scraps of her life together. Samantha has been shaken to her core because everything she felt like she had been trained to do failed her. She couldn't see that she was sleeping with a psychopath so she figures she is probably the world's worst profiler.

As for Blake...I have to say, I kind of thought Blake could've used more layers. Blake appears to be the protective good guy who will take care of Samantha and that kind of turns out to be true. When it appears that Samantha's psycho ex is back and killing again, Blake goes to Samantha. He tries to get her to come back to NY with him but winds up leading a new and depraved killer straight to Samantha's doorstep. Even though Blake appropriately blames himself for doing that, I was just a bit irritated with him. I didn't understand why he didn't realize how his actions might put Samantha in danger. In the end Samantha just wound up being a much more compelling character than Blake.

The mystery and suspense aspects of this book are just really good as always. This book is perfect for you lovers of romantic suspense.

ARC Review: Belle by Anonymous Girls

I will admit that a big part of me was intrigued by the unknown here. Belle by the Anonymous Girls is written by a writing duo that have chosen to not reveal who they are, but are said to have been authors that I had read before. That little bit of mystery to go along with this blurb were enough to get me to take a chance on this story.

Belle is just as they have described it, Gossip Girl meets your classic fairytales. But this story isn't like anything you would expect or have seen before. Adam ("Beast") is high school royalty, while Belle is considered to be on the bottom of the totem pole. But when Adam decides to buck the system, Belle finds herself going from peasant to more. From there everything gets shaken up and drama ensues.

I did like the characters and I was glad that this one was different that what I was expecting. It did contain plenty of angst and a ton of drama. For me, the secondary characters names got to be a bit much, I understand trying to make this book similar to what readers know of fairytales and Disney while making it new, but I just thought it went a bit too far. This one kept me guessing though and that is what really worked for me

I do think that this book will be a bigger hit with a younger crowd as it is a bit heavy with the high school drama. Fans of YA, fairytales and Gossip Girl will want to check this one out for sure. I did enjoy it though, and I look forward to seeing what the Anonymous Girls have in store for us next.

ARC Review: Ripple Effect: Episode 3 by Keri Lake

OMG!!!!! This book is ridiculously, insanely good. It is dark and twisty just like the two that came before it in the series but oh so good. Episode 3 picks up right where Episode 2 leaves off. Even though Episode 2 represented the beginning of the sexual relationship between Dylan and Rip but Episode 3 represents the beginning of the...more.

In Episode 3 we get a lot more information about the background of both Dylan and Rip. Honestly I just didn't know how to feel about Dylan. She only just turned 18 in book 2 and her life has been so awful. Dylan has been abused by nearly every adult in her life and it was just really hard to read some of it. On the other hand, Dylan continues to be one of the most dynamic characters I have ever read about. Dylan sees Rip the way nobody else has been able to and she responds to what he needs and not just what he says he needs.

In this book Rip's obsession with Dylan grows and morphs into something even deeper. Rip is kind of a psychopath so I'm not entirely sure what love would be to him but it is clear that Dylan belongs to Rip. Even though Rip continuously tries to fall back on the monetary nature of his relationship with Dylan when she pushes back at him and challenges him, he refuses to let her go. Dylan's honesty with Rip was as compelling as his struggle to trust is.

Ok, hang on to your hats because there is a lot of action in this book. I'm just starting to get how things between the Marchetti issue and Enzo tie together with Rip. In this book there is a really unexpected twist that leaves us dangling off a serious cliff at the end. When I realized I was on the last page, I actually screamed NOOOOO! It didn't really change anything but I got the shout out of my system. I can't stress enough how much I appreciate the writing of these books. Every installment just keeps getting better and sucking you more into the world of Dylan and Rip.

I have one note to the author: I don't understand Episode 1. I almost didn't keep reading this series because of Episode 1. There isn't enough information about the relationship between Dylan and Rip in Episode 1 to give you a good idea of where this series is headed. I never would have known this series would progress the way it has based just on Episode 1. I would strongly suggest that Episode 1 and 2 be combined so the reader knows what they are in for. I would just hate for people to give up on this series because the first Episode didn't give them enough information to keep going.
