My Favorite Things Event with Melanie Harlow

Melanie Harlow likes her martinis dry, her heels high, and her history with the naughty bits left in. Her stories are inspired by a sense of place, an appreciation for the past, and unexpected pleasures in life—especially the romantic kind. She lifts her glass to readers and writers from her home near Detroit, MI, where she lives with her husband and two daughters.

Melanie Harlow's 5 Favorite Things

1. An extra dry martini made with Valentine Liberator gin and garnished with rosemary and a cinnamon stick and served up. (Yes, I'm picky. But when it's done right, I'm in my happy place.)

2. Bacon. I eat it every single day.

3. The smell of fresh lavender. Pure heaven! (I also love the scent of Bounce dryer sheets in Outdoor Fresh. A little weird, I know, but it makes me feel cozy.)

4. My label maker. It's just the best thing in the world and makes me feel organized and on top of things. Just looking at all the things I've labeled in my office (especially my file folders) is enough to de-stress me.

5. A great book. No explanation necessary!

Theo MacLeod wasn’t supposed to be the one.

Tall, dark and handsome suits me just fine, but the cocky grin, know-it-all attitude, and mammoth ego? No thanks. I only hired him so I wouldn’t have to sit at the singles table again. It was just pretend.

He wasn’t supposed to kiss me.

My heart wasn’t supposed to pound.

We weren’t supposed to spend the night together—the hottest night of my life.

One night turns into a snowed-in weekend away, and even the blizzard of the century can’t cool the fire between us. I can’t get enough—of his smile, of his body, of the way he makes me feel.

We’re nothing alike. He’s a daredevil, and I’m a nervous Nellie. He’s a drifter, and I want to put down roots. He’s an opportunist with a checkered past, and I’m a Girl Scout volunteer.

But none of it matters when I’m in his arms.

I know he’s made mistakes. I know his wounds are deep, and he doesn’t trust easily. I know he doesn’t believe he could ever be enough to make me happy, but he could.

All he has to do is stay.

  3. Bacon every day!!!! WOW!!!! As much as I love bacon, I don't think I could eat it every day! I've never had a martini before because I'm not a huge fan of gin but your favorite sounds intriguing!

  8. Wow, that is a specific martini! I never thought of rosemary, that sounds wonderful. I'll have to try it. I loved If You Were Mine and think Theo's storyline was so perfect. I love how you create such sexy, strong but beautifully flawed alpha men! Thanks for the chance to win!
