Review: Sky High by C.J. Lake

Sky High is the third book in the Attraction Series by C. J. Lake, but it can be read as a standalone. This was my first book by C.J. Lake, and I didn't have a lot to go on when I started this book. With the blurb being so short, I will admit that I was mostly drawn in with the cover. While there were some really cute moments in this story, I did have a lot of issues with this one overall.

Jamie has set out to make this year his best yet. He already has the job, and with him moving into a new apartment and getting a new care, all that is left is the girl. So when his new neighbor Sky steals his parking spot, he never expects that she could be the girl for him. But as Jamie and Sky become friends, he helps her weed out the horrible men she keeps being set up with. Soon though Jamie is starting to wish that he was the man she was dating.

I liked Jamie. I thought that he was sweet and kind, funny and easy to get along with. He was such a great guy, and I really liked seeing him with not only Sky but also his friends. He is one of those guys that you just can't help but love. Plus he was also extremely sexy. Sky on the other hand was hard for me to connect to, and there were times that I almost didn't like her at all. She made some horrible decisions, she was on the whiny side, and she didn't seem to take much responsibility or blame when she had a part in them. At the end of the book when she up and leaves the country, Sky didn't seem to understand why Jamie would be upset and wasn't more supportive. She was irrationally mad about the situation when it was her decision in the first place. Then Jamie ends up apologizing for not being able to handle the distance, and Sky didn't really seem to feel any regret for leaving at all and that didn't feel right to me. So while these two had an obvious connection and chemistry, it was hard to really feel much for Sky because I thought that Jamie was definitely getting the short end of the stick here.

Besides Sky herself, I thought that this story had some problems as well. This book was told in third person and alternated between Sky and Jamie. But there were a couple of occasions when it would switch to first person, and that was a bit weird. Then Chapter 11 switches focus from Jamie and Sky to his friends Tragan and Andy. It was the only time that it happened in the entire book, but it was the whole chapter and there was no warning. It was just bizarre and I didn't really understand why it happened or was necessary. It didn't really add anything to the story, in fact it just seemed out of place and confusing for the reader. There was also one really glaring mistake here, and that was impossible for me to get over. I know one mistake isn't a big deal when it comes to the whole book, but it was the fact that this was an answer to a trivia question that they had given and ended up winning so it was really ridiculous to me that the author messed it up when it easily could have been looked up and fixed. When they are talking about the trivia game, Sky tells Jamie that she couldn't believe that he got the random question about the Arizona Cardinals correct and Jamie tells her that he loves baseball. The Arizona Cardinals are actually a football team in the NFL while the St. Louis Cardinals are a baseball team in the MLB. It wouldn't have been such a huge deal if this wasn't the answer to a trivia question, but because it was it really bothered me that the author and any editors/beta readers didn't catch that. Add that to the previous issues I mentioned and an extremely abrupt ending and this one was a bit of a disappointment for me. I think that this story could have been a really good one, but unfortunately this one just didn't deliver and felt more like a rough draft than a finished novel. I think with some editing and reworking this story could be better though and it did have promise. I did like Jamie's group of friends, so I would be interested in getting to know them all better.

ARC Review: The Moment of Letting Go by J.A. Redmerski

The Moment of Letting Go by J.A. Redmerski is a great summer read for new adult fans. Taking place in Hawaii, I could clearly picture myself reading this one poolside or on the beach. It had some really great moments that I absolutely loved and it also had a few things that weren't my favorite. But this one was a good story and I would definitely read more from Redmerski in the future.

Sienna is an events planner working her way up in the business. When she gets assigned a wedding in Hawaii, she heads there with her best friend and assistant Paige to make sure that everything goes as planned. But when she meets the sexy surfer Luke, she isn't quite ready to go home and decides to stay for two weeks when he asks her. Though Luke knows that he should have stayed away from Sienna, he found it impossible to fight the connection between them. But as Luke and Sienna continue to grow closer as their time together begins to run out, Luke has to remind himself that there is a reason that he doesn't do relationships.

I liked both Luke and Sienna, but I didn't really feel as though I could connect with Sienna much. I liked Luke better that I did with Sienna, and I think part of that was that Sienna lacked depth. While I didn't dislike her, I just didn't find myself really connecting with her or getting to know her character. I was glad that Luke pushed her to let go of some of her fear and embrace life more, as I think she desperately needed that. Luke was dealing with things from his past that he didn't like to talk or think about, and that kept him constantly wanting to push Sienna away though he knew there was something between them. While he had secrets that Sienna didn't know, the reader did get to see some of that thanks to the dual POV. I did want him to open up to Sienna and let her in earlier in this story, and I think that it might have made this one easier for me to get into had we seen these two start to share more with each other earlier. Because while I saw a clear connection and chemistry between them, I felt things progressed pretty slowly here despite the fact that Sienna decided to stay in Hawaii after just meeting Luke.

Overall, this was a good story and I enjoyed the takeaway of letting things go and embracing life and adventure. For me, this book was more about the message than the relationship though and I wish I had been able to connect more with the characters. I still think that it was a good story, I just wanting something more here. If you are a fan of Redmerski's I think that you will really like this book, and if you are new to her this is one that has a good message and is worth the read. I think that this is definitely one that new adult fans will really like though as it deals with younger characters learning to embrace life despite their fears and insecurities. While this story had romance, it had more of a coming of age type of feel to it, so I would recommend it for those that are looking for that more than a love story.

ARC Review: Shadows Strike by Dianne Duvall

Book six in the Immortal Guardians series by Dianne Duvall, Shadow Strike, is a fantastic read. I really enjoyed reading this book. I love Ethan; he was the one you hope will get his HEA in the last book Night Unbound. Heather is the perfect fit for him a balance to Ethan; practical to his humor, and strong enough to fight with him and standup to him. This book can be read as a stand-alone but to really you should at least read the book before. Books 1-4 follows with one story arc and Night Unbound is the start of another. This book has one fantastic and slightly creepy opening line; and from that point it has you hooked.

Eons ago, The Other’s an immortal race was forbidden to interact with the human race for fear that it would bring about Armageddon. Until one immortal fell in love and risked it all to be with her. In the time since Seth has protected the human race against the vampires that threaten them and Seth created the Immortal Guardians. Zach another immortal has also fallen in love and joined forces with Seth but he wasn’t the only one; one more has left The Other’s and is demented and crazed enough to start the end of the world himself.

Ethan has been felling lonely, it seems like everyone around him has found love. As one of the youngest Guardians he shouldn’t be too impatient but the woman he thought he loved has fallen in love with someone else. Heather Lane has been plagued by the same dream for the past year so she has been going out to the clearing by her house where it happens every morning and waits. Finally one morning, just like in her dreams, seven vampires stumble into clearing along with one very large sexy man. Raised the daughter of a General she was taught how to defend herself together with the sexy man the kill all the vampires. Ethan assumes Heather is already part of The Network, the human side if the Immortal Guardians, but when Heather explains why she just happened to be there Ethan has to explain it all because it’s obvious she is a Gifted One, but her gift isn’t a precog, she is a telepath but that doesn’t explain the reoccurring dream. Ethan and Heather have an instant connection but it still takes two weeks before Ethan goes to see Heather again only to be attacked again by more vampires. Heather saves Ethan from death only to risk her own. Seth saves her and sees in her mind that Gershom, the crazy Other out to destroy the world, is behind it. Combined with an incident with one of the doctors at The Network and the attack of U.S. military bases is planning something very bad. They take a risk and recruit Heather’s father, General Milton Lane, and some of his trusted men.

Overall, I couldn’t have enjoyed this book anymore than I did. It has the right amount of sexual tension and sex. Dianne Duvall has a real knack with her action scenes with so much happening but you don’t get lost in the description. It is tense that I found myself holding my breath during the fighting. I hope Aidan gets his book next. I also wish I didn’t have to wait a year for the next one.

ARC Review: Forever with Him by Sofia Tate

Forever with Him is the third book in Davison and Allegra's journey from author Sofia Tate. I have really loved these two since I first read about them, and this was a bittersweet book for me. While I loved getting more of them and seeing how things ended, I wasn't ready to say goodbye to them either. Sofia Tate did a great job though, and I could not have been happier with the ending to their story. If you haven't read this series yet, you will want to start at the beginning with Breathless for Him.

Things finally appear to be falling into place for both Allegra and Davison. Davison is starting a new business after the fallout from his father's business scandal, he is engaged to Allegra, and Allegra's career is taking off as well. As they prepare for their wedding, they know that they can get through anything as long as they are together. But when everything suddenly changes with one heartbreaking moment, Allegra and Davison will have to fight harder than ever for a life that is no longer the one they envisioned. As Allegra withdraws from everything and everyone, Davison will stop at nothing to show her that she belongs with him always.

This book had its ups and downs when it came to Allegra and Davison, but the one thing that never changed was their love for each other. Their love and connection was so special and strong, it was always what carried them through even the toughest of times. I loved seeing them plan their lives together and finally get the ending they deserved. Then when tragedy struck and everything changed, it was the constant support and unconditional love that pulled them through. These two are one of the greatest couples I have ever read about, and their relationship is unlike any other I have ever seen before. Seeing them here just reinforced everything I have come to know and love about them, and I can honestly say that I will truly miss them. They are definitely one of those couples that I will have to go back and read in order to get my fix from time to time.

So while I am sad to see their journey come to an end, I am also really happy with where things ended. They might not be living the exact life that they pictured, and yet they ended up exactly where they were supposed to. I love that they were able to lean on each other and that their life was one filled with love and happiness even if it took them somewhere unexpected. Sofia Tate is a great writer, and I was so happy to see that she didn't rely on something predictable for drama or conflict here. This story felt very natural and real, and the conflict was one that was heartbreaking but not impossible to overcome. I also loved getting more of the secondary characters here, and seeing their evolution as well. Some that I had strongly disliked before made huge leaps here, and while I was suspicious at first it really seemed as though they had changed. I loved that Sofia was able to redeem them and change my entire opinion about them. I cannot tell you how excited I am that she is writing a novella for Tomas and Lucy! I loved seeing them in this book, and I am very interested to see more of them as their story unfolds. I highly recommend this series, and I think that fans of romance will fall in love with Davison and Allegra just like I did. This series is not to be missed, and I am looking forward to more from Sofia Tate in the future.

ARC Review: Mind Over Matter by Kaia Bennett

Mind Over Matter is the third and final novel in the Loose Ends series by Kaia Bennett. Mind Over Matter continues the story of Gabriel and Nicole, and it has to be read in order. I have loved this series from the beginning, and with the end of each book I couldn't wait to get more of these characters. So I knew going into this one that it was going to be bittersweet. While I have been wanting to see what happened, I just wasn't ready for it to be over. I think that Kaia Bennett did a great job giving a satisfying ending to their story, and I think fans will be really happy with this book.
Gabriel and Nicole said they would try, but they learned that love wasn't enough. Now Nicole is realizing her dream by publishing her first book and getting ready to move in with her boyfriend Travis. Gabriel's career has taken off, and the band is more popular than ever. But with Jackie and Ian's wedding coming up, it was only a matter of time before Gabriel and Nicole would be face to face again as best man and maid of honor. When Nicole sets out to regain their friendship, they both find themselves falling back into their friendship with ease. But they also find old feelings returning that they never expected, and soon they are both beginning to rethink the path their lives are taking. Are they really over, or were they always meant to be together?

I have loved Gabriel and Nicole from the beginning of this series, and these two have never had a shortage of love or steam between them. Their connection has always been strong and undeniable. They both were passionate about similar things, and they have always believed in one another and supported each other through everything. But there were so many things that got in their way, including themselves. These two have always had some communication issues, and I was glad to see that Gabriel was more honest and upfront here. That being said though, they still had problems communicating and I really wanted these two to be better than they were at times. The chemistry between them though was as hot as ever, and I don't know how these two could ever been in the same room together without spontaneously combusting from all the sparks flying between them. It was clear that it was only a matter of time before they would find themselves unable to fight what was between them any longer.

I have to say that I did feel for Travis here though. Unfortunately for him, he was a good guy and would make the perfect man for someone it just wasn't Nicole in my opinion. Travis could have been absolutely perfect, yet for me Gabriel was always it for Nicole. So while I liked him as a person, I never found myself rooting for him. I think if Gabriel had never been in the picture that I might have felt differently, but since that wasn't the case I felt like Travis never really had a shot. I felt badly for all that he went through, and yet I couldn't help but want Gabriel and Nicole to find a way back to one another. Kaia Bennett is a great writer, and I have really enjoyed this series. It was sexy and emotional, and honestly with each book I just couldn't put them down. I wanted more of these characters, and I even loved the secondary characters as well. These characters felt so real and I was invested in their story right from the start. This journey wasn't always an easy one for them or for the reader, yet it was one that was so worth the read. There were some things in this book that I didn't necessary like or agree with, but I did feel as though they were true to the characters and their story. I think that Kaia gave them exactly the ending that was right for them, and I really can't wait to see what she writes next. While I will miss Gabriel and Nicole, I know that whatever Kaia Bennett writes next will be something I plan on reading.

ARC Review: Resist: Gavin by Heather C. Leigh

Resist is the third book in Heather C. Leigh's Sphere of Irony series. Each book in this series is an interconnected standalone story, and Resist features Gavin Walker, the bass player from Sphere of Irony. I have to say that this one was my favorite not only of the series, but out of everything I have read from Heather C. Leigh. Gavin and Mitch were super sexy together, and I loved the connection between them. I think that Heather did a great job with this M/M story, and I hope that she writes more in this genre in the future!

Gavin Walker wants to do nothing more than surf, play music, and hook-up with hot guys when he wants to. But when a stalker begins to escalate from sending letters to leaving "presents" for him, he begins to fear even going out in public. Wanting to keep the stalker from being public knowledge as well as the fact that he is gay, the band hires a friend of a friend to find the stalker before anything happens to Gavin. Mitch Hale used to track serial killers for the FBI and is now running his own business where he gets to pick the cases he takes. Though he has no desire to babysit any celebrities, he finds himself unable to turn down Gavin's case. But with the stalker escalating things, Mitch is forced to be around Gavin all the time in order to protect him. The more time the spend together, the more things from Mitch's past start to resurface. Mitch thought that he long ago buried that part of himself, but Gavin brings everything back and he finds himself wanting to be more than just a part of Gavin's life professionally. But can they catch the stalker before someone gets hurt, especially now that Mitch is a part of it as well?

Mitch and Gavin were super hot together. There were sparks between them right from the start, and you knew that they were bound to explode. From the very beginning these two were arguing and fighting, and it was so clear that the passion between them was more than they had felt with anyone else. Mitch wasn't used to dealing with celebrities and he thought that Gavin was a spoiled brat. But yet he also knew what Gavin was going through with the stalker and that it couldn't be easy. I really enjoyed seeing him get to know Gavin and how he handled everything that he learned about him. He was supportive and protective, and I was glad that Gavin had Mitch through everything. Gavin was great with Mitch as well. It was obvious that there was an attraction there, and yet he also knew that Mitch was facing things about himself that he never really had before. These two just understood one another and their connection only intensified as the story continued.

Overall, I thought that this was a great book. Gavin and Mitch were great together, and I loved their emotional scenes as much as their steamy ones. These two just fit together, even being as different as they were. I loved seeing them figure things out, and I just felt invested and connected to them right from the start. I also really loved Gavin's friendship with Hawke, and I can't wait to read more about him. The one thing that kept this one from being a five star read for me though was that there was a bit of whiplash with these two, and I could have done without some of it. I understand some back and forth, but after awhile I start to lose patience and it begins to grate on my nerves. But I still highly recommend this story as it was my favorite of not only the series but from everything I have read from Heather to date. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

Audiobook Review: Play by Kylie Scott, Narrated by Andi Arndt

This was the first audiobook that I've listened to that I didn't read beforehand. I always worried that it would be hard for me to really pay attention but I can definitely say that wasn't the case with Play. I really enjoyed this book. Honestly there were parts that I found myself crying because I was laughing so hard. Play was fantastic and I just couldn't get enough.

Ever since I read Lick and was introduced to Mal Ericson I just knew that I wanted more and that he would crack me up. Mal is just so damn adorably cute and hilarious. He has some of the best lines and I adored him. What I loved most about Mal is that there is so much more to him than the lovable funny guys. He might not know how to express his feelings verbally but he's intense at times and things affect him deeply. He has many layers to him and I found that I just couldn't get enough of him.

As for Anne it took me a bit to warm up to her. She's just so serious but honestly I think that is what made her and Mal so damn good together. She balances out his goofy side. I will say that once I warmed up to Anne I really liked her. She's fiercely protective of the people she cares about and I found that to be endearing. She's definitely got a mama bear quality to her that I liked.

Honestly I really enjoyed Mal and Anne together. Like I said I before I felt like they balanced each other out really well and brought out the best in one another.

As for the narration I don't necessarily love the narrator but she's not that bad. I think I would just like there to be a bit more range when it came to the other characters. It just feels like she mostly does the same voice for everyone. Also, I'm not the biggest fan of the way she does male character voices but that could just be a me thing. Would I go out and buy a book because of this narrator, probably not but I won't go out of my way to avoid her.

Overall Play was a fantastic story and great audiobook. I honestly can't wait to continue on with this series.

ARC Review: Consumed by You by Lauren Blakely

Lauren Blakely is one of those authors that I don't even read the blurbs for anymore. If it has her name on it, it goes on my TBR list. I was excited to get my hands on Consumed by You though since this one sounded so cute! This book was everything I have come to know and love from Lauren's books, and I really enjoyed this one! If you are looking for something sweet and fun, this is definitely one that you will want to check out.

Cara Bailey is a dog trainer looking to settle down and start a family. She knows what she wants, and she is looking for someone to share her life with. But what she doesn't need is to be fantasizing about her newest client, Travis Jansen. Travis has always been the one guy that Cara knew could please her in the bedroom. But Travis is also the same guy that never does relationships or commitment. With Cara and Travis forced to spend more time together as she helps him train his puppy, things start to heat up between them once again though they both know it can go nowhere. So when Cara decides to offer Travis a no strings fling with a time limit, can they work each other out of their systems before moving on once and for all?

I really liked these two. They were a lot of fun to read about, and just really easy to relate to. Travis was against anything serious after losing his father at a young age and seeing what it put his mother through. But he couldn't keep himself from letting Cara in time and time again. There was always something different about her, and you could tell that he really was blind to his true feelings. He was a good guy though, and I loved how sweet and caring he was with Cara. Cara was smart and fun, and I really liked how confident she was. She was good at what she did, and seemed to take such pride and joy in helping dogs and their owners. She was kind and helpful, and one of those heroines that you just can't help but love. But what I loved most is that as sweet and good as Cara was, she was also not ashamed to play around when it came to her desires. She had no problem letting Travis take charge, or asking him for what she wanted. These two were super hot together and you could feel the steam between them.

Overall, this story really had everything great you could want in a romance. It was sweet and sexy, fun and emotional. The connection between these two was undeniable, and I really enjoyed seeing how things played out for them. Fans of the series will love seeing familiar faces, while new readers will have no problems jumping in here. I highly recommend anything from Lauren Blakely, and Consumed by You is another winner from her. I can't wait to read more from her in the future, and I know that whatever she writes next will be something that I will enjoy.
