Review: The Unexpected Wedding Guest by Aimee Carson

Reese Michaels’ unexpected wedding guest is her ex-husband Mason Hicks. He’s under his doctor’s orders to get back in her life to heal. Their divorce came shortly after his return from duty in Afghanistan and his diagnosis of PTSD. The former Marine doesn’t mean to spoil her special day, but sparks continue to fly between them. Her fiancĂ©, Dylan, notices and decides to postpone the wedding, leaving Reese and Mason alone. The wedding is off, but the party lives on. All the guests’ travel plans are set, food ordered, and a DJ playing music. Reese, with Mason’s help, redoes the venue. The reception is bringing together Reese’s former college roommates. This book is in a series called The Wedding Season. Each one has her own story. Mason believes he’s done too much damage to her relationship with Dylan and leaves. Reese hauls after him, confesses she only loves him, and wants to start over. He gives her his dog tags and whole heartedly agrees.

This story treats Mason’s PTSD seriously. He has blinding migraines and severe memory loss. He sees himself as a burden to Reese which is why he left her. She has been seen as a spoiled princess with wealthy parents. She has leaned on them for advice and money. They also chose Dylan for her. Part of her character’s growth is accepting her shortcomings and being open to Mason’s illness. Ten years ago, she filed for divorce. Now, she’s stepping up to help him. True love conquers all.

I liked Mason. It’s interesting in books exes are so much better than current partners. He has health issues and doesn’t complain about them. He does love Reese and has never stopped. He tries to do the right thing and steer her back to Dylan. He sees him as a better match for Reese and more acceptable to her family. He has a loner vibe, a wounded warrior looking to cure others. His feelings are deep and hard for him to express, but real.

Reese is a piece of work. She lacks self-awareness. Dylan never expresses love, but gives the impression she’ll do fine as a wife. She relies on her parents’ approval and disapproval to gauge her love life. Her college friends tagged her as the Park Avenue Princess. She married Mason on a whim, but never took the time to know or understand him. By the end of the story, she’s confronted with her selfish behavior and decides to change.

This is a quick and enjoyable read. The best scene is the defacing of the ice sculpture swans. The idea of making a bad situation into a fun idea sustains the book.

Review: Bedding the Wrong Brother by Virna DePaul

Bedding the Wrong Brother by Virna DePaul was a short and sweet contemporary read. I really was excited to read this one because I love a good unrequited love story. The fact that the main characters had known each other since they were little and grew up together really sold me on this one. Even though this story wasn't exactly what I had been expecting, I thought that it was an enjoyable one.

Melina is an entomologist (she studies bugs) and is feeling a bit insecure after her latest boyfriend leaves her for a younger woman. As if that wasn't bad enough he tells her that she is bad in bed. Looking to make sure that she can please her next boyfriend, Melina turns to her best friend Max for help. Melina has been friends with Max and Rhys Dalton for years. She has had a crush on Rhys for years, but he has distanced himself from her and she decides that its better for Max to help her because she doesn't have the same feelings for him as she does for Rhys. Max reluctantly agrees, but ends up calling in his brother Rhys. Rhys and Melina end up together one night and Melina doesn't realize that it is Rhys and not Max until the following morning. Once the truth is revealed, Rhys is determined to be the tutor that Melina thinks she needs. As the two embark on a weekend together to tutor her, their feelings for each other grow even stronger. But when both are reluctant to have their relationship end at the end of the weekend, they begin to question whether they can turn it into something lasting. How can a homebody and a world traveler possibly have a relationship, and what are they each willing to sacrifice in the name of love?

I liked Rhys. He was sweet and thoughtful, and I loved how he was with Melina. Even though he tried to put space between them in order to protect himself, you could tell he really cared about her. I wish that we could have got to know him a little better though. I feel like we didn't really get a chance to learn much about him. I feel the same about Melina. Even though we see that she is vulnerable and a bit insecure at times there are other times when she takes charge and seems to become someone completely different. That being said though, It was as though we only really get to know these characters on the surface. I was hoping for more depth to them. I think that Rhys and Melina had good chemistry together and they had a few hot scenes together. I think that they were believable as a couple because they had known each other for so long and grew up together. But it wasn't quite as strong because they hadn't really been around each other in so long and for the past few years before this story takes place, Rhys had spent distancing himself from her.

My other main complaint with this story was that I didn't really find the situation believable. I thought that it was pretty crappy of Max to put both Rhys and Melina in the situation that he did. You could tell that his intentions were good, but I just didn't think that it was how most people would really act. I also found it pretty questionable that neither Rhys nor Melina really picked up on anything until the following morning. Both of them just blindly went along with everything even though there were several clues about who was who. Otherwise though, I thought that this one was a good but not very memorable read. If you are looking for a sweet story with an HEA, you might give this one a chance. It is one that you can sit down with and finish easily with a satisfying ending, but if you are looking for any real depth I would say this might not be the one for you. I am curious about Max though and I look forward to reading his book in the future.

ARC Review: Latymer by Tracey Devlyn

In Latymer Tracey Devlyn offers an exciting little novella full of intrigue. In the previous three books in the Nexus series we met a mysterious lord gone bad, William Townsend, Lord Latymer. Previously a friend of the Nexus leader, Lord Somerton, Latymer has betrayed the spy connections of both England and France. Now a doubly wanted man he has just a few hours to get himself and his nine-year-old son on a ship sailing to America. Thus begins a relentless journey of danger suspense before Latymer’s story is resolved. Hold onto your hats; it’s a very bumpy ride.

Tracey Devlyn took on a daunting task with this story. Seldom do you ever see a villain become the main character of a book. This villain is seeking some form of redemption for the poor choices he has made. Does he achieve that redemption? Maybe. The readers will have to decide. Latymer is not noble. He has sacrificed his honor for reasons that were clearly flawed. But he does love his son and that is his driving force. It is probably necessary to read at least some of the previous Nexus books in order to understand what Latymer has done and how his actions have affected the other characters in the Nexus-related network. This novella serves to tie up a number of loose ends.

Devlyn employs an unusual technique rarely seen in historical romances -- I would call it time-stamping. Because the story takes place in a very tight timeframe each chapter begins with the time of day (or night). This was very helpful in tracking the sense of urgency in the story. Another unusual technique was that the story was told from three different point of view: Latymer, his son Giles and Mac O’Donnell, who is seeking revenge for Latymer killing his brother. Many things happen in this short book: characters reach deeper levels of insight, a romance develops and a huge problem is solved. I am not a big suspense reader, but I found this book to be an intensive, wild ride. I liked that all of the characters were multi-dimensional and realistic. There were hard choices to be made and serious consequences to be dealt with. It was a very fast read and I enjoyed it. I will definitely be looking forward to the next Nexus book.

ARC Review: Three Broken Promises by Monica Murphy

Three Broken Promises is the third book in Monica Murphy's One Week Girlfriend Series. The first two books in the series are Drew and Fable's story and should be read in order. This book features Jen and Colin, both are characters we meet in the previous book, but Three Broken Promises can be read as a standalone. I would still recommend reading the first two books before this one though, because there are a few things that will be spoiled otherwise. I also liked that I already knew Drew and Fable and a little bit about Jen and Colin before starting this book. I was excited to get to know Jen and Colin better, and this book just so happens to feature one of my favorite tropes of little sister falling for big brother's best friend. I just can't help myself, it draws me in every time!

Jen has been looking out for herself ever since her big brother Danny died. She felt as though she was invisible to her parents and needed to leave. She ended up living in her car and working at a strip club in order to support herself. But her brother's best friend Colin found her and gave her not only a job, but also a place to stay. Jen has always loved Colin and the more time she spends living and working with him the more that she falls for him. But Colin doesn't do commitment and doesn't view her the same way...or so Jen thinks. Colin is attracted to Jen and has always felt connected to her, but she is the one person that he denies himself. Colin knows that he has broken promises to Jen and her family and thinks that he doesn't deserve her. But when Jen finally decides that she has had enough and needs to move on, Colin realizes just how much he cares for her and needs her in his life. Can Colin convince Jen to stay with him and give a relationship between them a shot?

I liked Colin. At first, I wasn't sure I was going to. He was cocky and arrogant, and definitely came off as not just alpha but straight up bossy. But he was also really caring and protective and he looked out for everyone he cared about regardless of what they had done or how they treated him. He even helped his dad despite the horrible relationship that they had. I could tell how much he cared for Jen, but he was always keeping her at arms length. Even after their relationship became more than friends, he could admit to himself that he had feelings for her but he wouldn't say anything to her. I liked Jen also, but I had the same problem with her as Colin. She knew she loved him and was hoping he would ask her to stay, and yet she never said anything to him. So many of their problems could have been solved with a bit more communication and that drove me nuts. These two had a ton of chemistry and were really hot together.

I really felt like even though they had known each other for years and cared about each other, their relationship was not very stable at all. They were constantly fighting, and hiding things from each other. Usually only ending a fight by having sex and openly admitting that they were better together when they weren't talking. I just felt like their relationship was weaker and not as believable because they didn't seem to be able to solve problems together. By the time that we get to the end of the story and they get past everything, I feel like we still didn't get a lot of relationship development. It seemed like they barely talked, but all of a sudden things between them were just different because they actually told each other that they loved them. For me, the push and pull between them was frustrating and wish they would have just been honest with each other. I also really didn't like Colin's dad or Angela and Roger. To me they felt like plot driven characters put in the story for the sole purpose of stirring up more drama. They were all quickly forgotten about or forgiven after they had served their purpose.

I do think that overall this story was good and enjoyable, and it adds to this series. It was nice to get to know Colin and Jen better, and I loved getting to see Drew and Fable a bit. But I think that my expectations were higher for this book because of how much I liked the first two books, and compared to those this one fell a little flat for me. Even though Colin and Jen were both likable characters despite first impressions, they both made poor decisions and handled a lot of situations really badly. I think that is what kept me from ever truly warming up to them and believing in their relationship and future. I think that Monica Murphy has a great writing style though and this book is no exception. The scenes between Colin and Jen were hot and steamy, and I never once questioned the chemistry or attraction between them. I think that New Adult fans will find this to be an enjoyable read, especially those that are fans of the One Week Girlfriend series. I am looking forward to reading Fable's Brother Owen's story and getting to know him better.

Breakout New Adult sensation Monica Murphy returns with a hot new contemporary romance—a heartfelt story of second chances, forgiveness, and redemption.

Commitment. That’s what I really want from Colin. Ever since my brother, Danny, died in Iraq, Colin’s done so much to help me, including giving me a job at his popular restaurant so I can leave my crappy waitressing job at the strip joint. But lying in bed with him every night to comfort him from his horrible nightmares isn’t enough anymore. I know he feels guilty about Danny’s death, about not going to Iraq, but I can’t keep living this double life.

I love him desperately, but he’s got so many demons, and if he can’t open up to me now, then he’ll never be the real partner I need him to be. I gave him a month, and now I’m out of here. If he truly loves me like he says, he knows where to find me.

ARC Review: The Smuggler Wore Silk by Alyssa Alexander

Loved, loved, loved this story. I cannot believe it is a debut novel. I was engaged with the story from the beginning and could not put it down! The opening scene is fantastic, Julian Travers, Earl of Langford, also known as “The Wandering Earl” is a British spy, however, he has been discovered, more importantly betrayed. Because of this betrayal he can no longer work in the Continent as a spy and is of no use to the British court. Julian is not willing to “retire” just yet. Through very clever undercover work he is able to obtain the name of some that can help him find the traitor-Grace Hannah.

Grace Hannah is a poor relative-servant- physician-smuggler. She is a fantastic character. She is strong and very in control of her surroundings. Grace lives with her uncle but is constantly looked down upon because she is “ruined.” She was left by her ex-fiancĂ© at the altar. Her uncle takes her in but basically treats her like a servant.

Grace is visiting Julian’s home instructing his servants on the proper combination of spices to make a perfect meal. When Grace meets Julian she is instantly leery of him. Although she has no idea he is a spy and that she is the purpose he is back from wandering the continent she is use to survival and knows that he will present a problem.

Grace and Julian have great chemistry and even though they are fun and interesting characters the intrigue behind finding the traitor is the best part! The author masterfully crafts a story where there is intrigue, romance and adventure. Grace and Julian are perfectly matched even though at first they both understand that their lifestyles would never suit. I personally loved watching Grace and Julian trying to figure out who betrayed his identity. I was so surprised by who the real traitor was and never suspected of this character! Looking back the author left excellent clues.

The author also introduces another spy, “Angel”. I cannot wait to read his story. He is just as interesting as Julian and it was very exciting to have him involved in this investigation. Ms. Alexander presents an excellent cast of characters, from the ex-fiancĂ© to the reformed Smuggler-Jack, to the mean Uncle Thaddeus. I would recommend and re-read this story!

ARC Review: The Lone Warrior by Lori Austin

WOW! Lori Austin really delivers in this novel! I was so impressed with her writing and her talent for portraying the Wild West. Even though I am not a historian I thought she really depicted the nit and gritty about life in the Wild West. She also depicted both horrors of the savagery from the U.S. army and also from the Cheyenne and the Sioux.

Now on to the characters. “Rose Varner needs a man…”this is a fantastic opening to Rose. First, Rose is fierce! I had to catch my breath with her. One of the reasons that Luke Phelan decides to help her is because he is so impressed with her courage and wow is she courageous. In one of many scenes, she comes face to face with a Sioux Indian that is ready to scalp her! She does not back down!! I’m glad that Lori Austen decided to name this book “The Lone Warrior” but I think she should have add women warrior as well. Ok, so besides coming face-to-face with a Sioux that wants to scalp her, she also has to fight for her life-several times! This women does not back down. Granted she is looking for her three year old daughter and is determined to find her, but she has nerves of steel. There is one part where Luke has to sew her stitches on her head and she doesn’t whine or utter one word of pain. There is also a part where she is covered in blood and instead of stopping and cleaning herself up she puts a hat on and jumps on top of her horse. I mean, seriously??!! I bow to Lori Austin, Rose is a force to reckon with!

Luke Phelan is also a terrific character. He made a promise to her, he would help her find her daughter Lily and get her from the Cheyenne. The author really portray all parts of his personality. He is a hero/traitor/ ghost/soldier/fighter/ crazy… You name it! Luke has been through many trials as a soldier and then as a prisoner to the Cheyenne though his quick intelligence and survival he is able to become one with them and finally earn his freedom. He is very tortured and reading about his ordeal was not easy. Hats off again to Ms. Austin she does not romanticize any aspect of what Luke with through as a soldier and as a prison. One of Luke’s struggles, besides the wanted poster with is face on and being wanted by both the U.S. army and the Cheyenne and Sioux he also has to learn to forgive himself and come to peace with his past. Luke is incredibly courageous and also very caring and protective of Rose.

You cannot go wrong with this story. There are so many great lessons to learn about struggle and courage. Both Luke and Rose are equally matched. They are a perfect combination of strength, bravery and courage. I would re-read and recommend this great adventure!
